Abla Pokou is an African queen who, around 1770, led the installation of Baoulé people from Ghana to Ivory Coast. The legend says that she sacrificed her only son to cross to able to cross a huge river. The word “Baoulé” which designates the descendants of the people she led came from the episode of the sacrifice of her son. After the immolation of her offspring, she declares “Ba-ouli”, which means “the child is dead”, hence the name “Baoulé“.
