The title of Negus is a title of Ethiopian nobility, equivalent to a king. Ethiopia is the only one sub saharian country in Africa that has never been colonized or defeated by european colonial powers. The Negus title appears for the first time under the ancient kingdom of Aksum. The title of negus is thereafter carried simultaneously by certain local sovereigns of the empire of Ethiopia, composed of different kingdoms: Choa, Godjam, Tigray in particular. This title should not be confused with the Negusse Negest, the king of kings, a title given to the supreme emperor.
