Patrice Emery Lumumba was born on July 2, 1925 in the Democratic Republic of Congo. A statesman as much admired as contested, he was the Prime Minister of his country and is considered to this day as its greatest national hero. In June 1960, following his speech proclaiming the economic and political independence of the Congo in Léopoldville, an anti-Belgian movement emerged among the populations and Lumumba was now considered a political enemy by the Belgian colonial authorities. In 1961 he was arrested and then assassinated following a plot implemented by the Belgian authorities and the government of President Mobutu, who had come to power after a coup the previous year.
