Lamane or Laman (also Laam, or Lam) – that is to say “master of the land” or “chief owner of the land” in the Serer language, – designates the land aristocracy, but it is also the title of the former Serer kings of Senegambia, a region which corresponds to Senegal and Gambia today. This Serer title was also borrowed by the ancient kings of the Wolof kingdoms.
